Hellooo!
I have been busy with school and super exhausted. I have updates about my doll though!! It was a bit of a mess because I had to print the first version of her and then basically redo half the body to make her joints fit better. It was also kinda intimidating even being at the 3D printers at my school. Most people there seemed to be 3D printing rocket parts and here I was making a doll.
Speaking of, I did start to get more comfortable and I spoke to another girl who was printing parts for her aerospace club. She told me that, apparently, her and her club saw the feet printing and thought it was funny, and then she realized it was my tiny feet when I told her I was making a doll.
Look at her tiny, half-finished feet! I actually felt weirdly emotional seeing them print. Like how white people love to take photos and prints of their baby’s feet... like “omg, that’s my baby’s feet.”
My doll's name is Kusum. I was looking through Indian girl baby names that didn't end in a vowel because there’s sooo many Indian names that end in a vowel and I wanted something that sounded more unique.
Kusum 1.0 was extremely kicky. She just could not keep her legs and arms straight and also her knees barely fit in the legs. Her torso was made up of three sections which looked pretty cool but were hard to fit well with each other. Her thigh joint was also unstable, and she could barely stand up either. Her head was also too tiny. I made it tiny initially because I wanted more realistic proportions, but after holding her in my hand, I realized I prefer the big heads of my Monster High dolls.
Here’s the best photo I have comparing Kusum 1.0 and Kusum 2.0. The lighting is terrible and there's an ugly, wrinkly Ziplock bag in the background that I hope you will ignore.
Here’s a photo of Kusum 2.0 where you can see the flowers on her thigh joint better. I made a cute scalloped border on her chest piece as well. Kusum means flower in Hindi and safflower in Telugu.
I also wanted her proportions to fit with my dolls that I already owned. Rainbow High bottoms fit pretty well on her while the tops are slightly too large. Monster High (G3) and LOL OMG tops fit but bottoms barely did. I haven't really tried any shoes on her. Here’s her wearing Olivia Woods and Lila Yamamoto's clothing.
Rainbow High has some of the most detailed and high quality clothing pieces ever. They even have some shoes made for flat feet, which is pretty good if I want to give Kusum some shoes for her flat feet. I haven’t even connected the hands and feet to Kusum 2.0 yet because I need to get S-hooks. Kusum 1.0 has her extremities attached without using S-hooks, but that makes it extremely annoying to switch out hand and feet poses. So Kusum 2.0 will just have hair clips for now.
I wanted to make a denim skirt for Kusum, so I made an attempt. It was a pretty good attempt, I think, but the skirt ended up looking wayyy too bulky. When I have time, I will definitely figure out how to make it fit better or make another attempt. I used old jeggings from middle school for the fabric, and it's pretty thin. But the way I stitched each piece together made it a lot thicker.
I wanted to have two face molds for my doll. One with inset eyes and others with painted-on eyes. I like the look of both. I tried my first ever faceup on Kusum on the not-inset-eyes head. I've never done a full repaint of a Monster High face though, so I'm definitely not the greatest at drawing/painting tiny details.
I had to use watered-down acrylic paint for the eye whites but acrylic is difficult, because I can't just wipe it off with a wet paper towel. I also used acrylic paint for her lips. The color is cute but the application is a bit messy. Oh, and the watered-down acrylic paint and the magenta watercolor pencil mixed together and gave her pink eye.
Overall, I'm pretty happy with how she turned out. It's mainly just cool that something I made on my iPad screen now stands on my desk. I'm not sure if I'll get her printed in resin yet. I want to make sure the skin color is still vibrant. This place in my school only allows for specific plant-based resins in the resin printer, so I'm not sure if I can get the right results here.
Okay, that's everything I have to say!
